|Statistical models of mass extinction|
Subject(s): CX.13, CX.35
Recently, a number of authors have pointed out that several distributions of quantities extracted from fossil extinction data appear to follow power laws, including the distributions of the sizes of mass extinction events, the power spectrum of mass extinction events, and the distribution of the lifetimes of taxa. In this paper we review briefly these results and then discuss a number of models which have been put forward as possible explanations.
