|Improved decoding of quantum error correcting codes from classical codes|

In this paper, we show that the construction of quantum codes from "classical" codes given by Calderbank and Shor and Steane applies to a larger class of codes than proved in these papers. We present a procedure to decode these codes that is able to correct more errors. Particularly, the nine-qubit code presented by Sho can be decoded using our procedure, though it does not meet the requirements of the decoding procedure. Furthermore, we show that the codes have good properties for stabilization against effects of the effective time evolution. Both results are derived from new relations between a binary linear code, its dual, and its weight distribution which will be published elsewhere.
